Thomas Brown grew up in Cazenovia, NY and has always had a love for the practice of dermatology. He graduated with a master’s degree from Arcadia University’s Physician Assistant (PA) program in 1999. He received specialized training in the dermatology field in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, working closely with physicians in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). He continued practicing dermatology in the Philadelphia area until his wife Lydia completed her Veterinary Medical Doctorate from UPenn when he returned home to Central New York in 2003. Since then he has practiced dermatology in Syracuse, and now in Ithaca.
Like all of our PA’s, Tom has a passion for excellence, fitting Dr. McAllister’s style of medicine and ideals to go above and beyond the normal patient standard of care. Likewise, he possesses a broad understanding of the diagnosis and management of dermatologic conditions. Tom strives to make sure we are doing all we can do to help our patients get better, and finds great satisfaction in helping his patients recover from their medical conditions.
Tom is an active member of his medical societies. He maintains membership with The American Academy of Physician Assistants, New York State Society of Physician Assistants, Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, NY State Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, and Central New York Physician Assistant Association. He has served and continues serve as a volunteer, committee member and board member on several of these groups.
Tom draws from his extensive training as well as over 20 years of dermatology experience. He has trained with Mohs surgeons, plastic surgeons, and dermatologic surgeons. He is highly experienced in performing independent surgical procedures including excision, repair, flaps, and grafts to remove worrisome skin lesions and skin cancer. From performing biopsies and excisions as well as preventative therapy of pre-cancerous growths, to assisting in Mohs surgical procedures and complex repairs, he has been well trained in managing benign and malignant lesions of the skin.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife and two adolescent children. They enjoy biking, snowboarding, hiking, and community service.
